That is a low, fussy angle: a neighbour’s double storey, a boundary wall or a tree that has put on fifteen years of growth can all sit in the path even though the dish is on the “right” wall. It is the single most common reason a first installation needs a second opinion about where the dish goes.

DStv broadcasts from a satellite at 68.5 degrees east, which from Benoni sits at an azimuth of about 62.4 degrees and an elevation of about 36.3 degrees, with the LNB skewed around 53 degrees. Those figures are effectively the same anywhere on the East Rand, so they are not a Benoni peculiarity — but they are why a wall facing the wrong way, a double-storey next door or a grown tree matters so much here.

Yes, and it is worth checking your body corporate or HOA rules before we come out. Some set limits on dish size, colour or which elevation it may go on, and a few restrict contractor days. None of that is a problem when we know in advance — a lower mount, a less visible wall or cable following existing lines usually satisfies the rule without compromising the signal.

Usually, but the wall is not yours to drill, so get the landlord's or managing agent's permission first and ideally in writing. Some buildings already have a communal dish with a feed to each unit, in which case the job is simply connecting and testing your point, which is quicker and cheaper. We check for that before quoting anything bigger.

Yes. A nearby strike can damage a decoder, LNB or TV through the power supply or the dish cable, and summer on the Highveld gives plenty of opportunity. The simplest protection costs nothing: unplug the decoder at the wall when a serious storm is coming over. Storm damage is a separate fault and is quoted separately.

An E48 error means the decoder isn't getting an adequate satellite signal. E48-32 is the weather-related version: heavy rain or a storm is weakening the signal, and it usually clears when the weather does. If it persists once the sky has cleared, the usual causes are a dish that has moved, a failing LNB, water in a connector or damaged cable — we test each to find which.

E16 is an account or smartcard message, not a dish fault, so nothing done outside your house will clear it. Check the account at dstv.com or phone MultiChoice on 011 289 2222. If they confirm the subscription is active and E16 is still on screen, call us — at that point it is worth looking at the decoder and the card itself.
