The visits that go smoothly are the ones where we arrive knowing what we are walking into. A photo of the front of the house, one of the existing dish if there is one, and one of the back of the decoder tells us most of what we need — which mount, which LNB, which connectors, and whether this is a half-hour job or an afternoon.

Tell us who will be home and how to get in. It sounds obvious, and it is still the single most common reason a booked visit has to be repeated.

Where more than one generation shares a house, one TV point is rarely enough for long. Extra View puts a second decoder on the same DStv account with its own cable, so the lounge and a bedroom are independent. We check the LNB, plan the second run, and connect both so neither is fighting for signal.

If the extra room is a separate structure in the yard, the run has to be planned properly rather than draped across the space between. We take it in conduit where it is exposed, fix it at sensible intervals and keep it clear of anywhere a ladder, a washing line or a car door is going to find it.

Wind, sun and hail are hard on an outdoor installation, and cheap fixings fail first. We bolt the bracket into something solid, tighten the mast properly, seal every outdoor connector and clip the cable along its length instead of letting it hang in loops. Loose cable is the part that gets pulled, snagged or worn through.

If an existing installation is already unreliable, we would rather test it than replace it. Very often the dish and the cable are fine and the problem is one connector, one bad joint or an alignment that has drifted a couple of degrees.
