DStv Maintenance & Repairs in Benoni

Sun, wind and one hard summer take more out of an outdoor installation than most people expect. We re-aim, replace and reseal — so the picture is still there in February.

Common Maintenance Jobs

Dish Realignment

A dish only has to move a degree or two to cost you the rain margin. We put a meter on it, bring the aim back and make sure the mount is not the reason it drifted.

Cable & Connector Renewal

Cable the sun has hardened, connectors gone green inside, joins somebody wrapped in tape. Those sections come out, the new ones get sealed properly.

LNB Replacement

An LNB on its way out gives you dropouts that come and go with the weather and never quite fail. It is tested, then replaced — with a twin unit if Extra View is on the cards.

Decoder Checks & Swaps

Connections, settings and the smartcard end of things checked, and where an old unit really has finished, a replacement installed and set up on your account.

What We Check on a Service Visit

Aim checked on a meter, not on the decoder's own bar
Mount, bracket and mast bolts checked and tightened
LNB condition and output check
Outdoor connectors inspected and resealed
Cable checked for sun damage, water and wear
Loose cable clipped down or moved into conduit
Signal quality read at every TV point, and the number shown to you
Decoder connections and settings checked

How an Installation Gets Old

Nothing about a dish fails dramatically. It loses a little each year: the bracket works a fraction looser, the sealant on a connector goes hard and cracks, the outer sheath of the cable chalks up in the sun, and the LNB gets slightly less sensitive than it was. For a few summers the installation still has enough margin to absorb all of it. Then one wet evening it does not, and the picture starts breaking up in the middle of something. That is what a visit from a local DSTV installer in Benoni is meant to catch — the margin, before the failure.

The dish comes first. We read strength and quality on a meter rather than trusting the decoder's own bar, which is a blunt instrument, then bring the aim back and check whether the mount is why it moved in the first place. A bracket that was under-specified for the wall will keep losing its aim no matter how often it is corrected. Then the LNB, which works harder than anything else on the system and shows its age as dropouts that come and go with heat and rain.

Cable and connectors next. Hardened sheathing, water that has found its way into an F-connector, a join somebody taped instead of sealing — each costs signal quietly. Damaged lengths get replaced, outdoor joins resealed, loose runs clipped down or moved into conduit. Indoors, the decoder's connections and settings are checked, and where an old unit is genuinely failing we can install and set up its replacement on the same visit.

For a shop or a guesthouse, timing a check before your busy stretch is cheaper than a screen going down in front of customers; our business installation page covers how those systems are put together. If something has already stopped working, start with the quick checks on our DStv error code help page — a fair number of call-outs turn out to be a cable that was never screwed in tight.

CALL TO BOOK

There is no schedule to follow, but spring — before the storm season really starts — is the sensible time, particularly if the installation is more than a few years old. The better trigger is behaviour: if the picture is breaking up more often than it did last year, the margin is already going.

Signal measured at the dish and again at each TV point, so we can see where it is being lost. Mount and bolts checked, outdoor connectors opened, inspected and resealed, cable looked over for sun damage and bad joins, the LNB tested, and the decoder end checked. Anything worn is priced before it is replaced.

Connection and setup problems, yes, on site. When the unit itself has actually failed, replacing it is usually the honest answer rather than chasing it — and we will say so instead of charging you to find out slowly.

A call-out with testing and diagnosis starts from around R550. Parts — an LNB, a length of cable, connectors — are quoted before they go on, never added afterwards. If photos on WhatsApp show us what the fault is first, we can often narrow the number before we arrive.

Nearly always a repair. Wind moves a dish, water gets into a connector, a nearby strike takes the LNB or the decoder's power supply — all of which are parts, not a rebuild. We test before we quote, so you are not sold a new installation for what turns out to be a R200 connector.
