Is There a DStv Branch in Benoni? What MultiChoice Actually Lists

"DStv Benoni address" is one of the most-searched things in this town, and the reason is obvious: something has gone wrong, and people want a counter they can walk up to rather than a queue on a phone. This page sets out what MultiChoice actually publishes about walk-in help near Benoni, and, just as usefully, which problems a counter cannot solve no matter how far you drive.
First, so there is no confusion: we are not DStv. We are not a MultiChoice branch, agency or service centre, and we do not speak for them. We are an independent DStv installation business working in Benoni and around the East Rand. Everything below about DStv's own walk-in points is taken from MultiChoice's website, with links so you can check it yourself.
What DStv Lists for Benoni
MultiChoice runs a directory it calls Find an Agency, split into four regions. Benoni falls under the Central Region list, in the block headed "Gauteng, Free State and Lesotho".
There is one entry under the area name Benoni, and the address DStv publishes for it is 12 Tom Jones Street, Benoni. The agency's trading name, phone numbers and email address are all on DStv's page, and it is better to read them from MultiChoice directly than from us, because that page is the one that gets updated.
DStv describes what these agencies are for in its own words: "Access authorised, in-person support through DStv Agencies nationwide. From account assistance and decoder services to upgrades and technical support, agencies provide reliable local service when you need it."
Note the phrase "in-person". An agency is a place you go to, not a service that comes to you.
About Trading Hours: Check, Do Not Assume
People search for "DStv Benoni trading hours" almost as often as the address, and here is the honest answer: MultiChoice does not publish opening hours for its agencies. The agency directory gives the area, the agency name, contact details and the street address, and nothing else. We are not going to invent hours for a business we do not run.
So before you drive: phone the number DStv lists on that page, or ring the MultiChoice call centre on (011) 289 2222. DStv states of the call centre, "Our call centre is available seven days a week, including public holidays, from 08:00 – 22:00. Please note standard rates apply." Agencies are independent operations, so their hours are theirs, not MultiChoice's.
The Nearest MultiChoice-Run Service Centre Is Not in Benoni
An agency and a MultiChoice Service Centre are not the same thing. MultiChoice runs a small number of its own service centres, and its help and contact page lists them: Randburg, Polokwane, Durban Central, Umhlanga and Cape Town. There is none on the East Rand, and none in Benoni.
For anyone in Benoni, the nearest is Randburg, which DStv gives as "Corner Oak Avenue and Grove Street, Ferndale, Randburg", open "Monday to Friday: 08:00 – 17:00" and "Saturday: 08:00 to 17:00", with Sundays and public holidays closed. That is a long drive across Johannesburg for something an agency counter or a phone call usually handles, which is why it is worth knowing what actually needs which.
What a Walk-In Counter Is Good For
Counter work is anything where the problem is the account or the box, and you can carry the box.
- Account queries, balances and reconnections
- Package upgrades and downgrades
- Smartcard problems and replacements
- Buying or swapping equipment
- Getting a decoder tested when you suspect it is faulty
DStv's description of its Express Agencies makes the scope plain: "DStv Express Agencies are authorised service centres providing fast, in-person technical support, including decoder testing, repairs and sales, with a focus on quick resolution." Useful to know that Benoni's listing sits on the ordinary agency list rather than the Express list.
What a Counter Cannot Do, However Far You Drive
Here is the part that saves the wasted trip. Nothing on this list can be resolved at a counter, because the problem is fixed to your house.
A dish that has moved. Re-aiming needs a meter at the dish, on your roof. DStv's own E48 page lists "an improperly aligned dish" among the causes of a lost signal, and there is no version of that fix that happens in a shop.
Anything about cable. Damaged cable, a corroded connector, a run that has to go somewhere new. DStv lists "damaged cables" and "loose connections" alongside alignment as E48 causes.
A blocked view. If a tree or a new building has grown into the line to the satellite, the answer is moving the dish, not swapping the decoder.
A new installation or an extra TV point. DStv routes this to installers rather than counters, and its Explora guidance says: "For customers that live in a complex, share a dish, have XtraView, or have the decoder connected to multiple TVs, we recommend consulting a DStv Accredited Installer."
Linking decoders physically. Worth reading DStv's wording carefully, because it splits the job in two: "We recommend the use of a DStv Accredited Installer for all XtraView installations. They will assist with the physical linking of your decoders. To ensure correct billing, you will also need to contact us to link the decoders on your account." The cabling is an installer job. The billing link is a DStv job. Doing only one of them is the usual reason an Extra View setup "does not work".
Save Yourself the Trip: Try Self-Service First
Most of what people queue for can be done from the couch.
The USSD line covers the common account jobs: dial *120*68584# from the cellphone number registered on the account, which DStv says lets you "Check what you owe, clear errors, view transactions and reconnect packages."
There is also web chat on the DStv site, which DStv says "is available Monday to Sunday, from 07:00 to 23:00" — wider hours than any counter.
And for a suspended-service error specifically, DStv has an online fix: "If your account is current and your package is active, you can resolve this error with our online 'Fix error' feature", adding that "Your error code may take up to 15 minutes to clear."
How to Tell Which Problem You Have in Thirty Seconds
Read the code on the screen.
E16 or E17 is the account. Nobody needs to visit your house and you do not need to leave it. USSD, web chat or the call centre.
E48 or E48-32 is signal. A counter cannot help. It is either weather, which passes, or something physical between the satellite and your decoder, which needs someone on site.
A decoder that will not power up or boot is hardware. That is the one worth carrying to a counter, because the box is the problem and the box is portable.
If you have read the code and it is the physical kind, that is the work we do. There is more detail on what a visit involves on the DStv repairs and maintenance page, and if it is a shop, office or guesthouse rather than a house, the business installations page covers multi-screen work. Either way, the Benoni DStv installation page is the place to start.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a DStv branch in Benoni?
MultiChoice lists one DStv agency under the area name Benoni in its Central Region agency directory, at 12 Tom Jones Street, Benoni. That is an authorised agency rather than a MultiChoice-run service centre. MultiChoice's own service centres are in Randburg, Polokwane, Durban Central, Umhlanga and Cape Town, so the nearest of those to Benoni is Randburg.
What are the DStv Benoni trading hours?
MultiChoice does not publish opening hours for its agencies. Its directory lists the area, the agency name, contact details and the street address only. Phone the number DStv lists for that agency before you drive, or check with the MultiChoice call centre on (011) 289 2222, which DStv says is open seven days a week including public holidays, from 08:00 to 22:00.
Are you the DStv branch in Benoni?
No. We are an independent DStv installation business working in Benoni and the surrounding East Rand. We are not MultiChoice, not a DStv agency and not a service centre, and we cannot deal with your account, your smartcard or your billing. What we do is the physical side: dishes, alignment, cabling, extra TV points and fault-finding at the property.
Can I get my DStv account sorted out by an installer?
No, and it is worth knowing why. Account status, packages, smartcards and billing sit entirely with MultiChoice, and no installer has access to any of it. If your screen shows E16 or E17, the fastest routes are DStv's USSD line on *120*68584#, its online "Fix error" feature, its web chat, or the call centre. An installer visit would achieve nothing.
My decoder will not switch on. Counter or call-out?
Counter. If the unit itself is dead, the box is the problem and you can carry it, which is exactly the case a walk-in agency is set up for. DStv describes its Express Agencies as providing in-person technical support "including decoder testing, repairs and sales". Where a call-out makes sense is when the decoder is alive and it is the signal reaching it that has failed.
